Kali Lohman

I am a registered psychologist and accredited EMDR practitioner with a deep commitment to helping people heal from past and present difficulties, in order to live more meaningful, fulfilling, and connected lives based on greater internal harmony and healthy relationships.

I prioritise working closely and respectfully with my clients to build a safe and supportive therapeutic relationship. I do this from a place of presence, deep listening and compassion. I work with you to clearly understand where you are and where you want to be. Based on this information, I develop a purposeful treatment plan that is in line with your goals. I use a holistic approach to therapy that is guided by evidence-based psychology and awareness of the importance of the mind-body connection.

I particularly enjoy working with adults who are at a point in their lives when they are ready to do the work that’s involved in making change. This often involves addressing childhood issues that are unresolved and impacting negatively on the present. This work is not always easy, but it always seems to be extremely worthwhile. People typically have powerful insights that change how they feel about themselves and others. These changes are more likely to be significant and lasting when they’re experienced in the body and integrated in the mind. A strong mind-body connection fosters better emotional resilience and physical health, allowing us to live with greater peace and ease.

I have over 20 years’ experience and training working with adults across a wide range of presentations. Drawing on neuroscience, western and Buddhist psychology and life experience, I believe that replaying old patterns in an unconscious way is very destructive to our present lives and relationships, whereas resolving past issues in a meaningful way allows us to feel clearer, calmer and more confident. Our work together can help to reduce the symptoms and reactions that you’re struggling with, as well as addressing the past difficulties that continue to impact.

The therapies I offer

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing)

EMDR uses eye movements or some other form of bilateral stimulation to allow the brain to naturally heal and process emotionally disturbing information. Overall, after EMDR you’re likely to think differently about traumatic events, leading to less negative impact on your life. As you process a series of key memories or issues over time, your symptoms are likely to reduce, providing positive and optimistic ways of thinking and your responses and behaviours are likely to change. Pathways start connecting between emotional and logical parts of the brain. These changes are likely to feel profound and long lasting due to addressing core issues rather than managing symptoms

Mindfulness-based therapies

These are beneficial because we learn to spend more time in the present moment, instead of being caught or lost in thoughts of the past or worrying about the future. Becoming more attuned to what’s happening in our bodies is a core aspect of wellbeing and something that becoming more mindful allows us to do. There are a great variety of practices that help us to develop the skill of being present in more moments of our lives and finding what’s most beneficial for you is often worthwhile.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a mindfulness-based therapy that helps by fostering psychological flexibility, enabling you to accept difficult emotions rather than fighting them, while committing to actions that align with your personal values. It helps shifts focus towards living a meaningful life, even in the presence of pain or adversity.

Parts work therapies focus on developing an understanding of the functioning of your mind and nervous system. Anyone who has experienced trauma or severe distress will have parts of their nervous system focused on managing those trauma responses. Developing insight into, and compassion for, the ways your system has helped you to cope or survive is a helpful approach in order to reduce reactions that stop you living your life in the way you would choose. I work integratively and intuitively, drawing on work from the Model of Structural Dissociation and Ego State Therapy.

Motivational Interviewing - Motivational Interviewing is a collaborative, goal-oriented style of communication that focuses on empowering people to explore and articulate their own reasons for behavioural change. Combined with other therapies, this can be a helpful way to understand and change unwanted addictive behaviours.

On therapy

Engaging in therapy is an opportunity not only to reduce distress, but to reconnect with a calmer, more grounded sense of self. My aim is to support each person I work with to experience greater clarity, confidence, and ease in their lives. If you’re ready to make changes in your life, I’m here to guide you and walk alongside you at the pace that feels right for you.

Throughout my career I have enjoyed worked with individuals from diverse backgrounds, including people from multicultural and LGBTIQA+ communities. I am committed to providing a respectful, inclusive, and professional space where each individual feels safe and welcome.
